In an alternate timeline, the Marvel Cinematic Universe would have started Phase 4 by now with Black Widow originally set for a May 2020 release.

That wasn’t to be though and fans are having to wait a few extra months for the exciting new Phase of the mammoth MCU. But that just means there’s no better time to rewatch it from the very beginning.

Watching the MCU in order is easier said than done, though.

Once upon a time, the release order and the chronological order were more or less the same, except for occasional curveballs like Captain America: The First Avenger, which was set largely during World War II.

With Phase 3 though, things were all over the place – and we’re not just talking about Avengers: Endgame’s epic time-travel heist.

Ant-Man and The Wasp was set earlier than the movie it succeeded and Captain Marvel went right back to the ’90s, while Endgame had a five-year time jump, meaning that suddenly the MCU was taking place in the future.

Things aren’t likely to get any more straightforward in Phase 4 either with Marvel TV shows playing a bigger role in the MCU than ever before.

With Falcon and The Winter Soldier, WandaVision, Loki and Hawkeye all set to arrive on Disney+, the timeline could be about to get even more complex as they all interweave with the events of the movies.

And don’t even get us started on Agents of SHIELD’s final season which is set to take place at various times in the past – and could even be on its own timeline separate from the MCU, anyway.

You could watch the MCU in its release date order, and if that’s the approach you fancy, head this way for our guide.

If, however, you want canon continuity, then we’ve gone through all the Marvel TV shows, short films and feature-length movies to bring you a watching guide in the order in which they actually take place.

There is still a problem, however. Some movies – like Captain America: The First Avenger – take place in multiple time periods. In these instances, the movie has been placed in the context of the time period in which the majority of the film takes place.

As for Agents of SHIELD season seven, we’ll add the episodes in separately when they take place, assuming that they take place in the main MCU timeline.
